Hi there Green Spotters. We're writing this blog with concern for the safety and health of pets eating Purina foods. Read on to learn why Purina should be recalling their foods while we wonder why they haven't done so. Pets are getting sick while eating Purina.
As of January 4, 2024, the public Facebook group Saving Pets One Pet @ A Time has received over 200 anecdotal reports of pets that have become sick from eating Purnia, and sadly, over 60 of these pets have died. These were previously healthy animals with nothing else in common other than eating Purina dry formulas. There does not seem to be one specific formula that is making pets sick, it seems to be from all different types of Purina, with Purina Pro Plan being the most common. If you or someone you know is feeding this food, we recommend you stop feeding it immediately! Do NOT wait until your pet gets sick or Purina issues a recall. They are not responding to these reports quickly. Severe vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and dehydration are the most frequently reported symptoms of pets who have become ill while eating Purina.
What you can do:
- Stop feeding Purina immediately.
- Report sickness to your veterinarian if your pet has had gastrointestinal upset recently while on a Purina formula. Work with your veterinarian to ease your dog or cat's symptoms.
- Report the sickness to the FDA. More on how to do that here
- Report sickness to Purina. Document your conversations with Purina. Do not send your pet's veterinary records to Purina. If Purina requests you to send them the food your pet is on, be sure to send only a portion and keep it in your freezer for later reference.
- Switch from Purina to a biologically appropriate dry or fresh food diet (gently cooked or raw. See our blog on fresh foods here).
- Add probiotics to your pet's diet to help begin to heal your pet's gut biome. Talk to one of our knowledgeable team members for assistance choosing a probiotic supplement for your pet. Read more on how to heal upset stomachs with food and supplements.
- Consider adding milk thistle to your pet's diet to help them detox from toxins that may be present in the Purina food. Check out our recommended milk thistle supplements.
